liverpool docks
went sea fishing on the mersey for the first time with my brother in laws, we caught whiting from 2 hours before and after high tide, some lads by us caught some plaice type fish (dont remember what they where called) alternated between 2 hook rigs and a pulley rig. bait was a mixture of squid mackrel and worms. weather was terrible very windy and on off rain (mostly on) enjoyed it though and would go again.

Re: liverpool docks
The mersey is fishing really well. I started sea fishing April last year. Seen some 15 pound cod's pulled out over the Xmas period. I would recommend giving it a go. The plaice like fish will be dabs, lots of them come out and they taste great as well. I normally fish from the Wirral side. I started with my carp rod and reel, and bought a sea rod later. Give it a go.

Re: liverpool docks
would a medium-heavyweight spinning rod be good over there or would i need a stronger rod?

Fishing the Mersey
There are few good spots to fish on the Mersey.
You could try Otterspool prom, near the old garden festival site.
Or if you go along the road a bit towards Liverpool on Riverside drive you have got the big GMB union building, any where in front of that good.
I like fishing new Brighton prom. there are few good spots up there. in front of the castle or to the right of the castle is could, there is a big channel that runs right up.
also if you come of the road and into the car parks that run along side the main road (Town side) you can fish of the wall. it can be quite good for flattys on the ebb.
There are a few boats that go out from Birkenhead, you can get them on the web. They are very reasonably priced, and go to all the same places as the welsh boys.
