Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
From another site
i used to have a membership for the mersey valley golf course lakes. when i joined there were only 11 members as it was £125 to join then £75 ever year after. when i first joined i was told that night fishin was goin to be available how ever after 4 years as a member it never came off the water just wasnt progressing as it should of. there are no real rules only no barbed hooks ect same old same. i was the only one on there fishin with two rods an alarms an the looks i used to get were comical mate. what you fish for mate aint nothin in there were the comments i used to get off the golfers. also there are no rules regardin fish care many a time i saw old fellas who should know better just putting carp on the stages an letting them thrash about .
anyway my point here is give the place a wide birth the fish are nearly all 8lb-12lb commons in four years fishin never had any think over than commons even thou they say there are mirrors in there. biggest i had was 13lb. there are rumours that there are 20lbers in there but never seen one...!
its mainly a match fishin water really with wooden stages all the way around the two lakes, the smaller lake is best for the carp. think the golf club owner missed a trick really if it was managed properly by some who knows about fisheries managment it would have had some real potential.
if i were you mate give them a ring and go see for your self it may appeal to you but dont be fooled into thinkin there are monsters in there. mike the bloke who runs it will try an sell it to you but it aint a carp anglers water unless you use a pole

Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
thanks alan76 for your reply.... does anyone know of any other lakes/ponds near by that are worth a try. i have paid for the ST Helens AA now for 5 years and only fished the Hotties (which as gone down hill rapidly in the last 2 years) and in that 5 years nothing as improved / invested in which is wrong because it could be a great place to fish if it was looked after and put some new stock in. Someone told me while i was fishing on sunday that the hot flow section of the hotties was drained/blocked in the new year and all the fish was moved into the tesco end does anyone know if this is true or not. Thanks again for all your replies.

Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
Hi, I dont know of any recent draining of the hotties or if it has been blocked. But, take a look in the NEWS forum and there is a thread on the St.Helens canal were this has recently been discussed. Regular users of the canal have been discussing the draining and removal of fish over the years.

Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
what happened is that warm water doesnt flow in as much as it has in recent years so the water temp fluctuates more so the fishing instead of being as reliable as it has been is becoming more akin to any other normal canal

Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
Great thanks bigbaz, i am now a member of Mersey Valley since March and so far had a great year, i have had perch (2LB being the biggest in the largest of the 2 ponds), Barbel and Chub just touching 2LB.ell at 3LB and my biggest carp so far is a 12LB on the small lake. But the guy accross from me had a 15LB and a 18LB in the same day right near the lillies on the small pond (where it meets the other pond). The biggest is arround 18 - 19LB but its just a nice place to fish

Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
I had a walk round the lakes a few months ago. Just a couple of questions for the members, are you guys catching a lot of fish a session, I much prefer getting lots of bites not really bothered about size . Have you got any idea how if fishs for silvers during the winter and does it get busy during the summer months?

Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
i only joined in march so not sure what its like over winter, went last week with 1/2 pint of maggotts and had ide to 1lb, roach to 1lb and loads of Perch and a few chub. (in the big lake) the small lake is mainly used for carp fishing. This summer was hard but it never gets packed the big lake on a busy day you get about 20 - 30 people but the small lake you are lucky to get 5 on there. We only have 120 members its great it never gets busy and its good fun.... one tip if you are on the big lake and you fish near the golf course take your umberlla .

Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
its pretty decent for silver like roach, breem and chub, ive had a 2lb roach and a 4lb perch and an okay chub, the carp are tiny though and there is huge restrictions on bait and hook size etc, not even allowed to use your own groundbait or pellets you have to buy theres which is £5 per kilo.

Re: Mersey Valley fishing ponds
st helens aa is a great local club, but in my opinion dont spen any of the money they recieve on there waters with the exception of carr mill dam, the canal for one example needs to be restocked!!
