THOSE WERE THE DAYS Empty eccleston mere

Post by newo Wed Feb 20, 2008 12:00 pm

what an interesting photo Tencher, i guess it was taken before Pilkingtons
extended it and built the retaining wall along burrows lane, how steep are those banks
and all the trees around the water i would like to see more, where did you get the photo
and is there a story attached

I've seen that photo before and it was captioned "Members of St. Helens Angling Association fishing at Eccleston Mere..."
I don't believe it is Eccleston Mere, I think it's actually Carr Mill Dam.

well i have just come back from st helens archives and i have to say back in 1890 eccy mere looked totaly different to how it looks now even in 1976 it looks almost a different water! i will be looking in to this further and hopefully put some pictures up here, i seen a good few today but at the cost of 33 quid an image (copyright and all that) it wont be just yet, i seen 1 picture of a fishing contest in 1890 where everyone was sat down for tea and eating sandwiches Very Happy

i have seen that pic before in the rangers centre at sherdly park, it is carr mill along the drop facing towards the arches end most of the photos they had came from scars (sanky canal thing) and they had a faair few of carr mill with the old boathouse the building of the new overflow and the old train staition that was there along with reports of the infamous percy/ swan battle

oh and a carp that weighed over 15lb in 1901 i think it was there were complaints that that would wreck the trout fishing Laughing

yes, i have had quite a discussion about the pike and swan battle, a few pictures or reports would be interesting ,, i actually saw them later dead on the bank, i missed it by minutes
i later saw both the pike and the swan in the mansion house museum in Victoria park
the pike was last seen in the rangers cabin in Taylor park but where it is now i dont know

i too like talking about the old times, Newo

not as we know em now but did have wildies in there are a few knockning round locally Ive seen one come out of carr mill that was only a couple of ounces but that was after the sankey had been stocked

one bloke caught one around the 12lb mark a few years ago on a rapala tail dancer in shad colours. not out of carr miil i might add but not a great distance away from it either
