just asking your methods about car mill....
due to the amount of snags in some parts, would you consider to use a float or stick to a ledger?
pm me if youd like to keep it a secret
cheers

Re: car mil
One of the problems with Carr Mill is that the water colours up very easily. Pike prefer to feed by sight but when the water is coloured they have to rely on their sense of smell and that's a less efficient method of feeding for them. By fishing a bait hard on the bottom it makes it easier for them to find the bait - it means they only have to search in two dimensions rather than three. It helps a great deal if you use a bait that lays a strong scent trail and to be honest, mackerel is probably the best bait for that - though lamprey is very very good too. Use a small mackerel and cut part of its head off. By that I mean cut it across the gill covers so as to leave part of the gills in the bait. The gills contain most of the blood in a fish and by doing it this way you'll get it to leak out the maximum scent.
Chop up another bait into little bits and throw the pieces in around your bait. Floatfishing your bait helps in this respect since it shows you exactly where your bait is and helps with accuracy.
Pick a windy day if you can, the wind will set up an undertow, spreading out the scent trail and making it easier for the pike to find the bait.

Re: car mil
get hold of some decent sized sardines (6-8") in years gone by its always been my 1st choice but get ready to learn about using shirring elastic, fuse wire, or casting clips to keep the buggers on if you want to do fish em beyond a few rod lengths
as for very fresh baits (still swimming) get hold of some rattles to use on the up trace these work dont think they are a gimmick
