Re: STRANGE THINGS CAUGHT WHEN FISHING
Nearly drowned while on a training dive.
We use a large sausage like device to mark the spot of divers when they are asending to the surface DSMB (delayed Surface Marker Bouy) similar to the one in the picture.

Well the idea of teh type i had bought was to orally inflate it with a hose like fitting pushed into your mouth. To do this you must remove your regulator from your mouth and exhale into the device well we had been diving for about 20mins at a depth of around 15-17mtrs (which does not sound deep but its 50-60ft deep) i signalled to my buddy that i was going to deploy my "blob" everything was ok until i had fully exhaled my lungs and let go of the DSMB which is attached to a spool of line this then shot to teh surface as it should but i had dropped my primary reg at this point i breathed in what felt like a full lung of water and paniced i decided i would risk being "Bent" from a rapid assent and looked at the surface fortunately my Buddy is a instrcutor and realsied what had happened and pushed my reg back into my mouth and purged it (forced air out into my mouth) now im coughing my brain cannot tell my lungs to breath in beacuse it has felt water enter them iam not in a state of mild panic but i then breath in the relief of feeling teh air enter my lungs with a small amount of water was a relief. when is strted the drill i had 150bar pressure of air in my tank which is a 15litre sized tank so the total amount of air i have is 150x15= 2250 litres of air at 15mtrs i usually breath at a rate of 15ltrs SAC(Surface Air Consuption) but at 15mtrs you have a pressure of 2.5 ATM so i ould normally use 15x2.5atm= 37.5litres per minute so i would have had about another 58mins left we usually surface with 50bar left or 750 litres in my cylinder in the sapce of 5 mins i breathed my cylinder down to 50bar and i am still at 15mts deep which ment that i had used 1450 litres of air in the 5mins which is 290 litres per min. needless to say i was a little pain and slightly smelly as teh brown stuff stayed in my suit and never hit the fan.
A lesson lernt.
I have also been inside a dark hold of a ship wreck looking for lobster and other bits when i looked under a metal plate to be face to face with a conger who's head was as big as a super league rugby ball. i backed away very quickly once back on board we compaired all our bits that people had collected and when i told Scott Waterman the skipper what i had saw he said OH George he lives ther did i forget to mention him i would say he must have been 60lb or more.
