Re: BIG PERCH
sorry rather childish of me to just put that
but find a water thats gots lots of carp and youll find a water with the potential for decent perch.
couple of jumping off areas the canal towards matalan (if you try this in the warm water bit youl catch stupid amounts of carp) leg o mutton should hold a few the canal near the college and st helens glass taylor park has the potential to throw a decent fish as well
1st dont use worms in there as youl be plagued with silvers and carp you need to set up paternoster rig ( you can fish a free roamer but if you have a small swivel as a running ring you can also anchor the bait with a small lead if need be) with a decent (4-6ssg) loafer/chubber float and catch a small silver fish 2-3inch
with me so far bulk the shot around 4-6 inch from the hook a size 6-2 superspecialist and lip hook the fish fish it around a foot off the bottom and hit any indications immediatly as perch will wolf the bait and a deep hooked perch is usually a dead perch
if pike are a possibility use light wire as the hooklength i like the soft wires for this fox and drennan both do one use around 20-25lb bs wire
I would avoid trebles at all costs when bait fishing for perch
if you are going to use this sort of thing backed up with an alarm then use a light bobbin on a long drop as perch really dont like changes in resistance
other than that mostt lakes round here hold decent perch but for some wilder fishing why not try some of the local rivers there are other surprises waiting for the hard working angler in them

Re: BIG PERCH
if you look closely at the 1st pic you can gauge how deep the water is where i caught it from 12-18 inch and the perch go to around 2lb in there

Re: BIG PERCH
aye they are a nuisance when you try bait fishing on there, no pike in there though but some lovely roach and a few chub and every blue moon a spotty tourist may also appear

Re: BIG PERCH
oh one other thing take something to cut hooks with a cheap pair of cutters from poundland are better than having nothing if the hook looks awkward cut it out dont prod and poke with perch their vital ogans are so close to the throat its scary hence a deep hooked perch will die avoid barbless hooks for the same reason as they will penetrate far deeper than a barbed hook
