a few years ago i worked on the constuction of the glass museum and there is a culvert running directly underneath the museum which in victorian times was basicly a sewer, you can see it when on the hotties if you look down the embankment, if there is fish in there i will be very surprised but anythings possible.

i think it is just as i thought, there a large basin in Dilloway street at the top of Lingholme road, here the "Spures brook"(spoggy) splits up into two parts
one part goes down a grid and is piped ,later after flowing under the park (remember the brook at the back of Randon street)and under liverpool road it is used to top up the canal, at the very end of the canal (face the hotel and go right ). the other half of the brook at Dilloway street enters a large tunnel ( i have been along it for about 1/2 mile when i was a lad )which again flows under the park still goes under liverpool road and down alongside the canal it goes under the canal near the big bend and at the other side becomes what was an open sewer" the stinky brook", but all this is no longer used as as sewer ,and in fact someone showed us some fish caught in the stinky brook about two weeks ago on here so maybe just maybe it is possible for fish to be there Newo

the canal is the St Helens Sankey Canal as you all know , the spoggy becomes the Sankey Brook and exits at a lockgate in warrington into the mersey thats where the eels come from and migrate upsteam

Re: klonking canal roach
The stretch of stinky brook is solid with big roach perch and the odd chub, lots come from the college stretch at pocket nook when the lock gates got trashed. If you follow it through all the way down past the newton stretch of canal you will get the odd trout thrown in. I walk there most days and have seen some good shoals of roach when the waters low.

which side of the hotties were you on ?? Pilks side or towpath side im thinking if it was Pilks side it may have been part of the Flue system used to heat and melt the glass in the old glass house near there, the culvert i`m interested in is on the tow path side running parralel with the hotties then under the canal on the big bend newo
